Everyone seem all excited about cloud technology.  I'm wondering how safe it is?????  Can it be hacked?

Before we get too far in this discussion, read http://mycloudhelp.biz/definition-of-cloud/

In my opinion, it's just another buzz word to get usn excited about paying more for a resource that has been there all along. Off-site computing can be nothing more than a managed server (dedicated or shared) where some company takes care of all the technical details like uptime, updates and security.

So, you're saying it can be hacked?

Thanks for the article, old buddy. I am a bit clearer now whereas the cloud was 'over my head' before - lol! One staement says, "Cloud-based storage companies have security that protects your data from intrusion, viruses, accidental deletion and other loss", so I guess it is more secure??????  Seems like hackers can get it to most anything these days......

I am quite sure there is no guarantee that anything connected in any way to the Internet can't be hacked, but at least you would have experts applying skills and resources to protect you. I do feel it's yet another 'buzz word' that is being used as leverage to give unsuspecting souls a false sense of security, to lure them into paying more for the same old resources that have always been available. Fortunately for us, it is more lucrative to use these tactics on larger entities with deeper pockets, than it is small time players like us.

old buddy suggested reading about the cloud here:  http://mycloudhelp.b...ition-of-cloud/.     It's a good explanation of what it is and how it is used.  However, it does not answer my concern about safety.  I'm concerned that people think their info is totally safe and I do not believe that is the case.  If hackers can get into the Pentagon and other government agencies, I'm guessing that hacking into various cloud-based servers would be "a piece of cake"!

I never said it was safe if you read the rest of my comment. However, your comparison with the Pentagon is a little far fetched, since hackers have far more to gain by hacking them than getting my information from a Cloud server. As much as hacking events are publicized, I still think they are insignificant to my personal safety. At least I am not going to live my life in fear because the potential is ever present.

I never said or even thought you believed it was safe.  My Pentagon example was just that 'an example'.  You are reading far too much into my statement.

They really don't

Let me give an example you will probably understand better. I used to think the best email solution was to have my own server and domain name with email service set up for just me, but now I use Gmail (cloud based) and I would never go back. All the headaches are taken care of for me and if I want to find an email from a couple of years ago, it's a 2 minute job. If I want to set up a filter to keep a spammer away, it's a 30 second job. If I want to organize tags and have the server automatically apply them, another 30 second job. Get the idea?

I thought it was for storing data just like a hard drive, didnt know you could host on clouds....

That's why the prime example I like to use (that shocks some people) is Gmail. It is a cloud application, because you don't store anything on your own computer, so you can access it from anywhere that has Internet access anytime of the day or night and you don't need to worry about the administration at all.
