Newbie Mistakes...

It really breaks my heart to see people who really do want to succeed make some , uh, dumb, mistakes. They will pour lots of effort and time into something and get NO results from their own dumb mistakes and not realize it. Then they think this is all BS, scams, crap, and lies...

So here are a few I see WAY too much in a lot of different advertising mediums.

  • Don't put the link for the ad source for sign ups IN the same ad source...In other words, don't put a link for sign ups (your affiliate or downline builder link) for "Mr. Safelist" IN "Mr. Safelist"....you are advertising to people who are ALREADY members right? Not possible to get new sign ups there is it?

  • Make sure your link ACTUALLY works...remember to include the "http://", the "www" and the ".com" at the end...otherwise you get a webpage that says, "The page cannot be displayed. (thislinkismissingstuff) cannot be found"

  • Make sure your profile is set up...otherwise there is page saying, "Yo, this dummy didn't set up a profile and now is wasting credits" or something like that. Nothing else on the page so nobody has any idea what it is or have any links to click.

  • Don't use a page with 17,000 videos that locks up my browser....

  • Make sure the page you are showing doesn't have ads that you have no control over. Far too often you get a porn ad and it is rather shocking to see on a TE or Safelist page. It is also a violation of every sites TOS. (It usually happens when you have someone looking over your shoulder and they ask you what the hell you are looking at)

  • Make sure your site isn't picky about who looks at it. When you get a site that says, "I ain't letting you in since I don't like your browser" doesn't give me the warm fuzzies.

  • For the love of all that is sane...don't have 20 exit pop ups on your page! It makes me want to hunt you down and ... well not do good things to you.

The devil is in the details! Anyone have any others?

There's another reason I think is happening all the time... It took me ages to notice this, but very often with sites that use php scripts (and a lot of them do) advertising in an iframe such as a traffic exchange or mailer seems, for some reason, to remove your personal affiliate link.

Take the site below as an example:

http://instantads4.me/index.php?r=davepilgrim

Now, if you click on the link it tells you right next to the 'Join Now' button that your sponsor is Dave Pilgrim (that's me) but if I add the same link to a traffic exchange, or a rotator like Pageswirl, my name is replaced with the site-owner's name, Frank Salinas.

I'm not saying site owners do this deliberately... I suspect some might not even be aware of the issue, but there must be hundreds of people promoting their affiliate links and not getting referrals for this reason.

Sometimes it's more subtle and might not become apparent until the signup page which appears after clicking on the front page, as is the case with this link:

http://www.downlinetrafficbuilder.com/?davepilgrim

This link doesn't contain a 'php' element but the signup page does, and again, if it's added to a traffic exchange, the referrer's name will disappear from the signup form.

Confusingly, there are php links which don't seem to have this problem. This one, for example...

http://rockettextads.com/splashpage.php?ref=davepilgrim

...works fine, and retains my name as referrer on both the squeeze page and the more detailed second page if viewers choose that option.

As a layperson I have no idea why these issues happen, but they can usually be got around by using a simple splash page which opens your affiliate link in a new window.

Also, you will have the same problems using cloakers to mask your link. I stopped using my cloakers on certain sites.

When I first started building lists I lost a lot of subscribers by bombarding them with too many offers.

Even though I was genuinely enthusiastic about the products/programs I was trying to share, people can still feel irritated.

Now I mail my lists a lot less often and try not to come across as too 'pushy'
