Stay away from programs that don't provide any value, product or service and that promise a guaranteed return of investment on the money you "invest". For example programs that guarantee 1% return of investment in 140 days. Definitely stay away from those programs.

I use both aweber and getresponse. Aweber probably has the best deliverability till this day. Every time I send a test email, it gets delivered lightning fast in my inbox and I like the user interface.

Results always vary depending on the offer you are promoting. However, there are a few sites like Sotam, List Joe, TheLeadMagnet, Bweeble, ListBonus, Traffic Bonus, Herculist etc. that usually give good response. You always have to test your offer though, some offers may perform well in some sites and other offers may perform not so well in your favourite mailers but they could perform well in other mailers or elsewhere.

I have upgraded to 50adaygetsyoupaid years ago and I still have an email autosend setup there. That autosend mailer used to produce better results in the early launch days. I haven't logged in for a while though. I think I might just log in now and and see how many credits I have accumulated, must be a lot.
