  3. Hi there! Ah, I see. I know a couple of people who use Linux, but have not sone so myself. I will ask them for some help, too. Thanks for your input. Most helpful. Have a grand day, John.
  4. Hi there! I have an ageing computer and don't want to replace it just yet. However, for the last couple of weeks I have a notice on my screen to say that Chrome is no longer sending updates to Vista users. Any advice as to what I should do? Best regards and looking forward to hearing from you soon, John.
  5. I just had the cable man in as we were thinking of moving our Internet connection from the phone to the cable TV system. He insisted on having an earthing spike driven into the ground before he did anything. I expect they have had similar problems with two pin connections here in Germany. Glad you sorted it out Nigel. Have a grand day, John.
  6. I a MacBook really better or is it more of a religion with Mac owners? I can't make it out... If you can convince me, I might buy one next time. Best regards and looking forward to hearing from you soon, John.
  7. It is probably about time that this was introduced what with all the scamming going on. We should all be connecting via secure communications for the good of all the good guys. We should make it as difficult as possible for the fraudsters. Have a grand day, John.
  8. O keep reading horror stories like this. What we need is a seal of approval issued by some independent organisation. I would certainly pay a subscription to such. All we need now is someone willing to take on the responsibility. Offers? Best regards, John.
  9. I got so frustrated with this that I eventually asked Norton and they cleaned out my PC and it is all working fine. I suppose sometimes you have to pay for a service if you can't get it for free (smile). However, thanks to all those of you who helped. I know a lot more about computers than before I started searching for answers. Best regards, John.
  10. Well, I have taken a closer look and it fine, except that I have not found a way to convert PDFs to Word, yet. They also have something called PDF Expert 9. Anyone had any experience of that. They claim you can edit PDFs directly with that. Best regards and looking forward to hearing from you soon, John.
  11. Strange, but I have just got an email from Avanquest pushing something called "TURBO VIEW & CONVERT" which they claim allows you to open files in 240 formats, edit them and then save them off in a host of formats. Has anyone had any experience of this? Best regards, John.
  12. Hi Darren, I will check PDF escape out. Thanks for the feedback. Have a grand day and Happy New Year, John.
  13. Hey, that sounds like a good offer. The semester hasn't started yet, but I will contact you if and when I need the service. However, I would really love to be able to do the conversion myself. Best regards, John.
  14. Has anyone any experience of pdf editors? I have a number of documents which have been created for a course that I lead, but the original docs that were created in MS Word are not available. I need to correct a number of errors in the pdfs without having to type in everything again. Best regards, John.
  15. Oh, bleepingcomputer.com, is not only in my Rolodex, I have it saved away in other safe places, too. Have a grand day, John.
  16. Well, I tried everything that was suggested and then it was time to renew my Norton subscription. Their new version (Norton Security) sorted it. I had been using Norton 360 and, for some reason, that hadn't found the problem. However, the next challenge is that my PDF editor now no longer works... Stay in touch, John.
  17. Hi there and thanks for all the great input. I have now discovered that it is not really Firefox related, it is "default browser" related. Whatever I have set as my default browser fires up all by itself every now and then. Strange... Any ideas? Best regards and looking forward to hearing from you soon, John.
  18. Hi there! I have just downloaded ADWCLEANER and it shows me that I have all sorts of rubbish installed that I didn't even know that I had downloaded. I am going to try deleting them bit by bit. Maybe I can find the origin without destroying anything else. I will let you know how it goes... Have a grand day, John.
  19. Hi there! Good to see that Darren is on the ball (as usual). However, as Phyllis and Celia point out, the 72 hour rule did not appear to be working anyway. Although I quite like forums where people post their personal activities, I think there are enough of them around that we do not need to clutter this one up with "I have just bought a boat and can't wait to sail it" and let it concentrate on items that help our Internet marketing. Talking of which, has anyone used Ginger? It appears to have taken over my PC! Best regards and looking forward to hearing from you soon, John.
  20. Got lots of nice input from bleeping computer. I am not really sure where to start. I will give it a thorough going over. Thanks for pointing me at the site. Have a grand day, John.
  21. Hey, thanks for that. I will pop right on over there and ask them. Have a grand day, John.
  22. Hey, that sounds like it keeps you busy. I have heard only good things from my friends around here, although I am still a bit reluctant to go ahead and do it myself after the motto: if it ain't bust, don't fix it (smile). I am looking forward to your feedback, John.
  23. On the subject of Windows. Has anyone taken a good look at Windows 10? It has got some good press over here in Germany, but much of it looks like it has been written my Microsoft and the papers have just published whatever they have received from the marketing department. Best regards and looking forward to hearing from you soon, John.
  24. Great information. I will keep an eye out for that and also post anything that I think is a bit questionable. Anyone else identified potential scam sites that they would like to share with us? Best regards and looking forward to hearing from you soon, John.
  25. Can anyone tell me which free hosting I should avoid? I am thinking of setting up a site, but don't want to commit to paying for a hosting service until I am sure I have it sorted. Thanks in advance, John.
